*The Dharma - The Secular 8-fold Path - The Cartography of Care

by Stephen Batchelor

based on the early teachings by Gotama, the historical Buddha

_________________________________________________________________________________

The Dharma

*Dharma also known as the teachings of the historical Buddha has the Sanskrit root dhri, which means “that which upholds” or “that without which nothing can stand” or “that which maintains the stability and harmony of the universe.” The practice of the dharma starts by paying embodied attention to what is going on.

Embodied attention*: "… that such attention can be understood as attention that is born from one’s belly, attention that is nurturing, caring, and loving …"

The Secular 8-fold Path** is to be cultivated and consists of two each other supplementing parts:

Contemplative life:
mindfulness, collectedness, perspective, imagination
      🔗
Active life:
application, survival, work, voice

Curious what these path elements can actually mean? Listen here

The Cartography of Care

"It's a whole table. It’s a map. It’s a map of how I understand the basic ecosystem of Buddhist ethics. And so it has constituted out of what I call the four tasks:

embracing life or suffering
letting reactivity be
seeing it stop
cultivating a way of life or a path ..."

- Stephen Batchelor

32 virtues are represented in the Cartography of Care:

Four foundations of mindfulness
Body, Feelings, Mind, Ideas

Four resolves
Creating conditions
for reactivity not to arise
for letting reactivity be
for virtue to arise
for sustaining and increasing virtue

Four steps of creativity
Aspiration, Perseverance, Intuition, Experimentation

Five strengths
Mindfulness, Confidence, Courage, Collectedness; Discernment

Seven facets of being awake
Mindfulness, Wonder, Courage, Joy, Stillness, Collectedness, Equanimity

The eightfold path
Contemplative Life
  Mindfulness
  Collectedness
  Perspective
  Imagination
   🔗
Active Life
  Application
  Survival
  Work
  Voice
