About me
History of Essentials
In 1992, after self-studying contemporary and ancient philosophy, I was drawn to Buddhism—especially Rinzai Zen.
At that time my life felt shallow and lacking direction, and Zen seemed to offer a response to the profound existential questions I faced.
From 1992 to 1998 I trained at a Rinzai Zen center in Wuppertal affiliated with Sotetsu Yuzen Roshi (if of interest - lineage: Sotetsu Yuzen Roshi, Seki Yuho Roshi, Hakuin Ekaku ... Rinzai Gigen).
From 1998 to 2003 I practiced in the Soto Zen tradition in Aachen (if of interest - lineage: Roland Rech, Taisen Deshimaru Roshi, Kodo Sawaki ... Dogen Kigen).
In the early 2000s I encountered Stephen Batchelor’s approach to the dharma, which strongly resonated with my experience of practicing in a secular life. Since then I have attended meditation retreats with Stephen across Europe, including in Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, and The Netherlands.
Born in 1959, I completed my first degree in electrical engineering in 1985 and worked for 15 years in the automation industry, followed by more than 20 years in public administration focusing on environmental protection projects.
Since 1992 I have maintained a continuous practice of secular dharma, psychology and practical philosophy. I see myself as a work in progress, aware of how reactivity limits our ability to live a caring, present, and joyful life.
